The Olympics drives away human rights says Shanghai petitioner

Shanghai petitioners are being monitored by officials since July eighteenth, in an attempt by the Chinese communist regime to prevent them from petitioning in Beijing during the Olympic Games.
Jing Yuehua, a petitioner from Mingxi district in Shanghai told SOH that from July eighteenth, basically all petitioners in the entire city have been monitored, with a number of them being detained. She said that she heard that as many as sixty petitioners are to be detained and sent to labour camps.

Ms Tsai from Changning district said that she saw security personnel when she went outside recently and they told her that they are starting the monitoring again. Ms Tsai said in her region, there are over forty petitioners being monitored.

According to another Shanghai petitioner, officials began monitoring them as early as in May this year when the Olympic Torch Relay was in Shanghai. Ms Tsai also said that she was told by officials not to go out when the Olympic Torch was there. She replied that them doing so, would actually amount to them boycotting the Olympics.

Jin Yuehua said she was monitored from July eleventh, when she was approached by her local police and Party Administration Secretary who told her not to go to Beijing during the Olympics, and if she was to leave Shanghai she needs to notify the police. They reiterated that if she co-operates, they will attempt to resolve her problems.

Mr Chang from Hongko district said many petitioners who have returned from Beijing in July are now under house arrest, many have been officially detained by officials. He says police have taken some petitioners and put them in hotels to keep an eye on them.
