Mass demonstrations calling for the release of Tibetan political prisoners
Four non-government Tibetan organisations have staged a global demonstration to urge the international community to call on the Chinese communist regime to uphold the Olympic spirit and release all Tibetan political prisoners before the Beijing Olympics.
According to Norway’s Voice of Tibet, the Tibetan Women’s Association , the Gu Chu Sum Movement of Tibet - Association for Prisoners of Conscience, the National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) and the Free Tibetan student movement held a joint press conference in the Tibetan refugee region Dharamsala, north of India. The groups announced that protests will be held in Dharamsala, the headquarters of the UN, International Olympics Committee and the European Parliament and they will submit petitions to urge the Chinese communist party to release Tibetan political prisoners arrested during the Lhasa riot earlier this year before the Olympic Games.
There are 6689 Tibetans who have be detained for being implicated in the Lhasa protests, 215 have been killed and the whereabouts of around 1000 Tibetans are unknown, according to the organisations. In addition, over 100 Tibetans have been sentenced by the Chinese communist party, including 42 in the Tibet Autonomous Region
The four organisations re-iterated that Chinese government internal documents, revealed by Hong Kong media, show that Zhang Qingli, the Chinese Communist Party Secretary of the autonomous region said that the regime is preparing for the “second cultural revolution” in Tibet after the Olympic Games. The press conference said these four groups will lead Tibetans against the crackdown by the CCP .
Leader of the NDPT Qimayyongzhuo, on behalf of the four organisations, called for Tibetans to unite and fight for the freedom of Tibet against the danger faced by the Tibetan ethnic group.
