In the womens 10 km marathon swim, Russia’s Larisa Ilchenko put in a late challenge to beat Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten of Great Britain to the line and claim a dramatic victory. Ilchenko took the lead in the final 100m after Payne and Patten had led for most of the race, finishing in a time of one hour 59 minutes 27.7 seconds with Payne and Patten just a few strokes behind.

World beach volleyball champions Todd Rogers and Philip Dalhausser of the USA are guaranteed to win at least an Olympic silver medal after beating Georgia in the semi-final. The Georgian team were both Brazilian-born and changed their citizenship for the Beijing Games to circumvent quotas that limit each country to two teams at the Olympics. In the final, the Americans will play Brazil’s Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz.

The USA booked their place in the final of the Olympic softball tournament when they beat Japan by 4. Some huge hits from Crystl Bustos saw her home-run tally for these Games reach five. All is not lost for Japan though; they could still reach the final if they beat either Australia or Canada in the bronze medal game.
