Li Jinping arrested for demonstrating at Zhongnanhai
On the eve of the 17th Convening of the Third Plenary Session of the Chinese Communist Party, a Beijing Human Rights Defender Li Jinping went to the Xinhua Gate at Zhongnanhai displaying banners calling for a rehabilitation for the former General Secretary of Chinese Communist Party Zhao Ziyang, who was arrested by police.
After being denied several times for permission to protest by the Beijing Security Bureau, rights defender Li Jinping sought to petition at the Xinhua Gate in Zhongnanhai and shouting, “To rehabilitate Mr Zhao Ziyang”. He was quickly taken away by two plain-clothes and 5 to 6 uniformed police at the scene. His younger brother video taped the whole incident and later distributed the video to Free Asia. Li’s family were unable to locate him.
Li Jinping once worked as Beijing police officer. He had worked for Zhao Ziyang’s family when Zhao Ziyang was under house arrest. After Zhoa’s death, Li set up a mourning hall and memorial at home which gained the attention of authorities. The building was later forcibly demolished. Li Jinping was under house arrest during the Olympic period and released on September 19.
