China sentences 8 monks in Tibet for bombing
According to Chinese official media on October 14, Tibet’s Chamdo District Court judge announced the verdict on eight Tibetan monks allegedly accused of setting off a bomb in Gyanbe Townships government building in Chamdo District in March this year. Two of them were sentenced for life with six others recieving five to fifteen-years imprisonment. It is reported that the explosion did not cause casualties or property damages.
Ms. Buligedan the chief of the Free Tibet Campaign headquartered in London of England, said in an interview with American Associated Press that they are concerned whether this trial proceeded with principles of fairness, justness and transparency. Ms. Buligedan also added that the judge’s verdict of the case would affect the upcoming dialogue between Beijing authorities and the Tibetan Government-in exile, moreover, she stressed that Tibetans have not been enjoying the same rights as other Chinese ethnics.
