Zhen Enchong questioned again by authorities
Shanghai human rights lawyer Zhen Eng-Chong was taken away for questioning on Wednesday morning after his home was searched by public security officers. His wife believes that the latest summons has to do with Zhen’s signing of the Constituion 2008, a public document calling for democratic change in China.
Zhen En-chong’s wife Jiang Me-li told SOH on Wednesday (December 17) that at around 10.30 that morning, 7 members of the Zhabei branch of the Shanghai Bureau of Public Security came to search their home, and took away with them a computer and a cable for connecting to the internet. Jiang says that the officers went straight for the computer, and upturned blankets, opening draws, closets and the entire search took 2 hours.
Zhen was called again by the Shanghai Bureau of Public Security over “taxation” matters. This is believed to be the 4th time that he has been called in for questioning after meeting with European Parliament Member Helga Truepel on November 24. Jiang believes that the house search and summons is related to the recently published document “Constitution 2008”, to which her husband is a signatory.
Jiang says that her husband was taken for questioning last time by Public Security officers over the Constitution 2008, but he ignored the questions. She believes that he has again been taken for questioning over the same document, and calls for the community’s attention on the treatment of Zhen Eng-Chong.
Zhen was released later on Wednesday night at 9.00pm
