Another journalist illegally arrested
A female journalist from China’s Central TV station in Beijing, Jing Jianfeng, was arrested by the Public Security of Ling County in Shanxi Province, and charged with harbouring suspects.
According to Beijing’s “Commoners” Magazine, on October 9, 2007, a serious criminal case occurred when a man named Cheng Wei-Xiu was attacked and died at the hands of a number of thugs who broke into his office. Three of his family members were also wounded in the attack.
In February 2008, reporter Jing Jianfeng from the “Democracy and the Rule of Law Times” was assigned to the survey job in Ling County. After carrying out normal procedures before setting off for the interview the case was exposed in the article, “An evil gang of Shanxi Luliang, a triad crime goes unpunished”.
After the reporter approached the victim’s brother-in-law, in May 2008, he was also arrested by Beijing Haidian Branch’s “Strike Team”, and charged with “organizing and leading the triad society”. The reporter, Jing Jianfeng, was also arrested at the same time. Subsequently, Jing Jianfeng and Cheng Yun-Qiang were taken back to the Haidian Branch for a pre-trial.
On December 4, Jing Jianfeng was charged with suspicion of “harboring, impeding the performance of official duties and practicing graft”, and put on trial at the County’s People’s Court.
