Conflict over illegal government land seizure

During land acquisition, the Yunxi County Government of Hubei Province, in the absence of reasonable compensation, ordered contractors to forcibly lay bricks to seize the land. Recently, conflict arose again with the villagers, causing injuries to an unidentified peasant woman who was knocked to the ground. She clung to the assailant to take photographs as evidence. Civil rights farmers said local farmers would protest to the end to safeguard their rights.

The assaulted female farmer, Meng Taijun, told the reporter that she was beaten as she was approaching the contractor to prevent the laying of bricks to seize the land. “The main reason for the assault is that we did not let him build the wall” she said.

Meng Taijun’s brother said in a recording, “People need food to survive. Without any consent or agreement, they cannot touch others’ land by law.”

A representative for the rights of farmers, Mr. Deng Kaicha, pointed out that the local government collected the land for a low price. He pointed out the profit they will gain by selling it at a higher price, which completely disregards the long-term livelihood of the people.

Mr. Deng said in a recording, “We want to appeal to the Ministry of Land and Resources in Beijing. But not being optimistic about the circumstances, we, the majority of villagers here, are determined to fight to the end.”

It is known that in the pretext of a key project to build East Binhe Road, Yunxi County Government seized a land of 394 mu (about 65 acres), affecting 374 farm households and jeopardizing the interests of farmers, together with various types of production and living facilities.
3 billion yuan is expected to invest on the project, taking 3 to 6 years to complete.
