Guangzhou encounters ‘once in 50 years’ rainstorm
On March 28 Guangzhou encountered the severest rainstorm to hit the city in the past 50 years.
According to Chinese media sources there were 54 points of flooding in the urban areas. The water level in the most serious areas reached more than 1 meter, resulting in heavy traffic congestion; the stalls of the clothing and cloth wholesale markets in the city were also flooded; trapping thousands of tourists and shoppers.
Heavy hail accompanied the rainstorm, according to Mr. Liang, a vegetable farmer in the Huangpu District “the hail was as big as a human thumb, and very scary, just in a short span of five minutes, all the crop were destroyed, nothing could be saved.”
