On June 27 a nearly completed 13-story apartment building on the outskirts of Shanghai toppled onto its side. One worker was killed, the building however remained nearly intact.

The building, the first of three buildings on the property, was planned to be occupied in May 2010. Some of the units had already been sold. The construction of other buildings on the property has been terminated.

The only victim of the tragedy, a construction worker on the site, had reportedly gone into the building to get his tools before the accident happened and was subsequently trapped in the building.

Many of owners were outraged and demanded a refund of their deposit. Residents in the neighbourhood also expressed concerns and questions over the stability of the foundations in the neighboring apartments.

The developer, Shanghai Meidu Real Estate, could not be reached for comment. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
