Guangzhou home owners protest against power station construction
Over 2000 home owners in a community complex in Guangzhou have been protesting since New Years Eve, against the resumed construction of a high voltage substation just a stones throw away from their homes. The protestors from Jun-Jing Gardens in Tianhe District were met by over a thousand police. 30 home owners were arrested.
Arrested for creating the China Petitioners Alliance
Ms Wang Li-Qing is a petitioner from Shanghai. She participated in a non-government organisation called the China Petitioners Alliance. Following a meeting of the Alliance she was intercepted at her front gate by plain-clothed policemen delegated by the Hongkou District government. She was forcibly taken, against proper procedure.
Thousands protest transformer station built near homes
On January 2, thousands of residents gathered near the west gate of the Canton Royal Ascot Garden to protest the building of a transformer station near their homes. The crowd at the west gate clamoured and beat drums while shouting slogans like, “relocate Transformer Station,” “no arrests,” and “save our children.”
Chinese AIDS activist under constant house arrest
AIDS activist Li Xige of Henan province, has been under house arrest from Chinese authorities for over two years. Her phone lines and Internet have been cut-off. Li Xige says the local government prevents victims from appealing over AIDS, in order to conceal the AIDS epidemic.
